Exploring Mental Wellness with Sam Osmond: A Counsellor’s Approach

Meet Your New Counsellor: My Approach to Mental Wellness

I’m Sam Osmond, a Clinical Counsellor and Psychotherapist here at CQ Psych Services. My approach to counselling is centred on an empowering idea: shifting our perspective from seeking help only when we’re feeling overwhelmed, to actively engaging in practices that nurture our mental and emotional wellness.

My Counselling Philosophy

Counselling for wellness is about more than simply managing difficult emotions or life events; it’s about taking proactive steps to build resilience, enhance self-awareness, and cultivate a balanced life. Therapy provides a unique space where we can explore who you are, understand how your life experiences have shaped your beliefs, behaviours, and relationships, and navigate your journey toward healing and growth. It’s not about fixing what’s broken but rather uncovering your inner strengths and creating the life you truly desire.

We all have experiences that have contributed to who we are today. Some of these experiences are uplifting and empowering, while others may have been more challenging or traumatic. Regardless of where you’ve come from, therapy offers a safe space to explore these experiences, allowing you to understand how they impact your present life. With reassurance and guidance, we can work together to navigate through the past, process any unresolved emotions, and move toward the future you want to create.

One concept I often emphasize in therapy is finding clarity. This is an essential part of the process, and it’s something I reference frequently in our work together. As Brené Brown aptly puts it, “Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind”. This means that in our conversations and reflections, clarity isn’t just a goal—it’s a kindness to ourselves. When things are unclear, it can create confusion, fear, and doubt. But when we achieve clarity, we have a better understanding of our emotions, our behaviours, and our paths forward, which ultimately leads to healing and growth.

Healing happens in connection. My role as a counsellor is to foster a non-judgmental, respectful environment where clients can explore their thoughts and feelings openly. I deeply value authenticity and curiosity, and I encourage my clients to approach their healing with the same openness.

My Experience

I bring to my work a wide range of experiences that inform and shape my approach to therapy. I’ve had the privilege of supporting individuals at SANE Australia Help Centre, where I worked with people who have lived experiences of complex mental health, trauma, and distress. This experience deepened my understanding of how multifaceted mental health challenges can be and reinforced my commitment to providing compassionate, client-centred care.

Additionally, I’ve worked in private practice in Tannum Sands, helping couples, adolescents, and adults navigate personal struggles, emotional blocks, and life transitions. I’ve witnessed the transformative power of therapy in helping people reconnect with themselves, heal from past wounds, and cultivate healthier relationships. No matter where you are on your journey, I believe that therapy offers an opportunity to explore the areas of your life that may feel stuck, develop new coping skills, and shift patterns that no longer serve you.

Embracing Mental Wellness

Mental wellness is about more than just managing difficulties—it’s about cultivating joy, resilience, and a deeper understanding of ourselves. Therapy is a journey toward wellness. It’s not just about finding relief from painful parts of our lives but about taking proactive steps to create a life that feels aligned with your true self. Counselling for wellness is an empowering process that helps you build a foundation of resilience, clarity, and well-being that supports you in all areas of life.

If you’re facing a specific challenge, experiencing mental health challenges, relationship struggles, or simply seeking to understand yourself more deeply, I am here to walk alongside you. My approach is holistic, meaning I consider all aspects of your well-being—emotional, physical, and relational—when providing support. Together, we will explore your thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and relationships, and work toward a deeper sense of healing and self-discovery.

By taking the first step toward therapy, you’re investing in your long-term wellness—unlocking the potential to thrive and navigate life with greater confidence and purpose. If you’re ready to take that step, I would be honoured to walk alongside you on this journey toward wellness.
